Traditional ballet teachers can seem fussy about the dress code in their studios. There is a reason for this.
When a teacher is looking over a class in motion, visual clutter needs to be at a minimum. Black leotards and pink tights are a good uniform landscape for the teacher.
The black of the leotard emphasizes the line of the posture, the upper back and neck suppleness/tension, the hip/leg break and alignment correctness, and makes it easiest to respond to what is seen with ongoing and detailed corrections.
For instance, it is easy to see, even across a large studio, if the back of the thigh is not pulled up as needed, if the dancer is wearing pink tights. The line of the muscles is hidden in dark tights. It is also easy to see bulky tension in thigh muscles that should be more elongated.

Just like office folk get to wear more casual clothes to work on Fridays, my student-day classes were allowed to wear colored leotards and black tights on Saturdays. Once you have the green light to begin ballet pointe work, and you've picked out your shoes, you'll have to sew the ribbons and elastics onto the shoes. You will also learn how to lace them properly.
You're going to need the ribbon and elastic, needle, thread, and scissors. The thread should be sturdy, and you can use unwaxed dental floss if you like. Sturdier thread means you only have to sew it one direction. Choose a needle with a large eye.
The ribbon often comes as one long piece. To begin with just cut it in half. You will figure out later, when you tie the ribbons, exactly how long they should be.
The best way to determine ribbon placement is to fold down the back heel of the shoe. Some of the shoe material, about the length of your thumbnail, will look like it's still with the sole of the shoe, but that's okay. Fold the heel down into the shoe. Find the spot where the heel comes alongside the rear quarter panel, and that's where you'll fasten your ribbon. (If you had your shoe on, this would be where the highest part of the arch hits your foot.) Mark this spot, inside your shoe, with a light-colored marker or chalk.
The next step is to ensure the ribbon will not fray by sewing onto that spot and folding it under. Sew it in tiny stitches just near the top of the shoe, but take care not to sew into the vamp elastic. Try to keep your stitches invisible from the exterior of the shoe, and make your beginning and ending knots inside the shoe. Do the same on both sides of the shoe.
In order to sew your elastic into place, turn the heel of the shoe inside out so that it's easy to reach. Sew one end of the elastic into the heel, just slightly off center at the back of your foot. Do it the same way as the ribbon, with the edge turned under and using very tiny stitches. You don't want your stitching to show when you are performing ballet pointe on stage!
Once you've sewn that, put your foot into the shoe. To decide how much elastic you need to wrap around your ankle, flex your foot to about ninety degrees. Wrap the elastic very snugly, and then tuck it down into the back of your shoe. Mark it so you remember the spot once you take off the shoe. Then you'll sew it into the back of the shoe, again taking care to use tiny stitches and avoiding the vamp elastic.
To tie your ballet shoes, put your foot through the elastic, and insert your toes into your toe padding. Then put your foot the rest of the way into the shoe, and pull the back of the shoe up over your heel. Don't pull on the shoe by the elastic, because you'll wear out the elastic.
Pulling the ribbon across the front of your ankle, make sure you begin with the ribbon on the inside of your foot. Pull the other ribbon so that it crosses the first one exactly on the front. Then wrap the ribbons in two circles around the ankle, ending in the back above your heel. Tie them in a double knot, and tuck the knot into the encircling ribbon to hide it. Be careful that your knot does not lie against the ankle bone, otherwise it will rub! Hide the knot by tucking it under the ribbon.

If you like to stretch before class, some warm up is absolutely necessary. Some loose leg and arm swings, and easy bending forward and sideways is a good way to start. Deep breathing while you do this adds to the warm up.
If you feel stiff from sitting at a desk, or driving, walk on the spot for one minute. Lift your feet and pump your arms a little, this gets lots of muscle and joints moving.
Stretch very easily before class. You can get serious about it after the barre, or after the class.
The end of the class is an ideal time to stretch. If it is not possible because the next class is starting, and you cannot find another place in the studio to stretch, wear leg warmers home. Sometimes you'll feel warmed up for quite a while after class. You can stretch at home immediately or take a hot bath then stretch. Soaking with epsom salts or sea salt is healthy for the muscles. The minerals help draw the acids out of your tissues.
Active stretching is where you stretch your own muscles. If you're sitting in second position, you can hang over each leg, and then hang forward. Stretching over each leg is going to stretch your hamstrings, and all the muscles, ligaments and tendons around your pelvis and hips. You can lean out sideways keeping your torso stretched long to stretch the hip joint area. Then you can do a side bend over the same leg, and you'll feel the stretch in the hamstring and the opposite hip and side of your torso. If you're stretching to the right, be sure to keep the left hip on the floor, and the left leg stretched.
Deep breathing provides enough movement to apply pressure to the stretch, you do not need to bounce.
If you can reach your feet in a second position stretch, you can pull yourself over the leg, hold the position for a minute or more, easing back if you start to feel real pain.
Passive stretching is when someone else stretches you. Stretching with a partner is not recommended until you are very advanced. A physiotherapist can stretch you properly, but if you avoid injury, you won't need that.
Stretching causes discomfort. Before you get to the point of pain, you are already stretching. You don't need to push to the point where you see lights before your eyes. Stretch every day and be patient, and stretch safely. If you avoid injury to your soft tissues you will dance in ballet shoes and pointe shoes for many years.
