If you have recently started learning how to Parkour you will have noticed that your feet are used a lot and perhaps eventually concluded it is somewhat important what you wear on your feet when you run around 'tic-tac-ing' off walls and 'precision-ing' on to rails.
What is important in a Parkour shoe?

After practising Parkour for a while you are likely to draw your own conclusions on what is important to you and what type of shoe suits your style.
However if you are truly new then there are a few things to consider when deciding what to wear.
1. The type of shoe is very important: When beginning to learn how to Parkour I would advise sticking to running trainer style as they are designed for - running! And as such have a lot of properties suited to Parkour which I will cover below.
2. A cheap or 'cost-effective' shoe is ideal: Parkour is a very intensive sport on the shoes. Especially when you first start learning. Frequent practice will see rapid wear and tear on your favourite shoes. Numerous scratches on the exterior from failed tic-tacs and lost rubber soles from sliding down walls when learning to cat leap. Finding a shoe that is cheap is not a necessary aspect of your first shoe but Parkour can quickly become an expensive past time if you're having to splash out on expensive trainers every 3-4months! Yes, you will be getting through a lot of trainers.
3. Light weight design: The Parkour shoe should be light weight in design so you can run and jump with ease. You are forgiven for thinking chunky rubber soles are the way forward to absorb the impact of high jumps! Absorption of impact is more a case of technique than chunky rubber which only serve to weigh you down.
4. A flexible sole: The flexibility of a sole is important in such that it allows you the sensitivity to feel the surfaces you are on and better interact with it. This is will become more important as you advance in your Parkour training and is another reason to avoid the chunky rubber soles.
5. A well fitting shoe is important: It should be snug and fit like a glove. It is important that it is comfortable and not tight like a climbers shoe. You do not what your foot to slip inside the shoe and throw you off balance when you land your first massive rail precision.
6. Strong grip: This is a little obvious but I felt it was important not to leave it out. A strong grip in both wet and dry conditions is desirable. Overall you should avoid training Parkour in wet condition as often the effects of slipping are unpredictable. A strong grip in the shoe other than helping you run up walls and 'stick' to a surface when you land also aids in your confidence when learning how to Parkour. You want to know as the very least you can trust your Parkour shoe to grip the surface.
